This AR is similarly used in remote care and consultations from doctors without the need for patients to visit a clinic. The US-based company HelpLightning gives experienced surgeons a possibility to guide and interactively assist their less skilled colleagues during operations in real-time. Smartphones and tablets are used by remote professionals to project their hands in mixed reality so that the individual receiving help can see exactly what should be done.
Artiness – Contextual Information Overlay
By combining everyday work scenarios and complex relevant contextual data, AR improves the efficiency of medical professionals’ work and provides them a chance to focus on what is truly important – examining, diagnosing, and treating patients. Augmented reality also improves pre-procedural planning before surgeries and patient examination by simulating patient-specific models. Italian startup Artiness develops an AR-based holographic platform for patient-specific procedural support. It allows doctors and surgeons to visualize different approaches for surgeries, providing decision support for pre-procedural planning.
Augmedics – Surgery Duration Optimization
The work of a surgeon is very time-sensitive, as the patient’s health and life are often on the line. AR has the potential of providing professionals with capabilities that were previously nonexistent such as cutting the time of surgeries while increasing the rate of success. By combining high-quality visualization or 3D objects with real-world surroundings, a potent medical tool is created. This includes an overlay of CT scans over the patient’s body, reconstruction of tumors in AR, and much more. Israeli Augmedics develops a high-tech tool to project a 3D model of an individual’s CT scan onto a patient during spine surgery, effectively giving the doctor almost an X-ray vision and enhancing the precision of the surgical interference itself.
