Spanish startup Vortex Bladeless is a tech startup developing bladeless wind power turbines, making them safe for birds and other flying animals. This type of wind turbine is designed especially for on-site residential power generation that is compatible with on-grid, off-grid, and alongside solar panels.
Enebird – Noiseless Wind Turbines
Opposition to wind power generation argues that conventional turbines can harm human health because of their subsonic noise emissions. A possible solution to this challenge is creating a new generation of noiseless wind turbines. Spanish startup Enebird develops wind turbines that run silently without causing noise pollution. The connected generators can even be embedded below ground level to mute them entirely. These noiseless turbines are perfect for homes, parks, offices, other living, and public spaces.
Flower Turbines – Visually Appealing Wind Turbines
Another objection posed by opponents of wind power is the unaesthetic look of the wind turbines in the surrounding landscape. Developing new designs of wind turbines in order to make them more visually appealing is one of the solutions to this challenge. The US-based company Flower Turbines designs and develops tulip-shaped small vertical axis wind turbines. Besides the aesthetic design, these turbines have numerous benefits including safety for birds, low level of noise and vibration, the ability to start at lower speeds and to boost the performance of their neighbors when tightly clustered.
Wind Challenge – Compact Wind Turbines
Traditional wind turbines have a large blade span, covers acres of space, and are operated on a large scale by specialized utility players. This system creates issues for the entire surrounding environment and it is expensive to connect this energy to productive use in urban areas. Small wind turbines allow small scale implementation of the energy source, powering everything from boats to buildings. Dutch startup Wind Challenge develops the Wind Leaf, a small, silent, easy to install, and lightweight wind turbine. Contrary to the conventional turbines, this compact device won’t cause big shadows on surrounding landscapes. The Wind Leaf can be used for powering residential homes and individual office buildings.
